Kremlin says Russia is closely observing developments in Venezuela
(MENAFN) The Kremlin stated that Russia is closely observing developments in Venezuela following reports that President Nicolás Maduro requested military equipment from Moscow, including radars, aircraft repairs, and possibly missiles.
According to reports citing internal US government documents, Maduro sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin detailing the requests, which were reportedly intended to be delivered during a visit to Moscow by a senior aide last month. The documents also referenced a separate letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping seeking “expanded military cooperation” to counter what was described as rising tensions between the US and Venezuela.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state media, “We are watching very closely what is happening in Venezuela,” emphasizing that Moscow continues to maintain contacts with Caracas under existing treaty obligations.
Peskov added, “Of course, we want everything to remain peaceful and for no new conflicts to arise in the region. The world is already full of conflicts. New conflicts are not needed,” in reference to the escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas.
Reports indicate that the US has carried out over a dozen strikes on vessels it claims were involved in drug trafficking from Venezuelan waters, resulting in at least 61 deaths since September. The US has not publicly provided evidence to support these claims, while Maduro has rejected the allegations.
