Sahra Wagenknecht Accuses Merz of Exaggerating Russia Drone Threat

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is reportedly giving the public a misleading impression regarding a supposed drone menace from Russia, according to Sahra Wagenknecht, head of the leftist BSW party.

Wagenknecht told a news agency on Thursday that the chancellor hastily connected recent unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sightings throughout Germany to Moscow despite lacking concrete proof.

Wagenknecht claimed that Merz was amplifying the situation, while German media largely accepted his narrative without scrutiny, even when the evidence suggested otherwise.

“Mr. Merz goes on TV… and lies,” she asserted, pointing out that the chancellor made his remarks after several incidents were either verified as unrelated to Russia or were found to have never occurred.

“It’s simply a vague suspicion, which has been largely refuted, and then discussed by the chancellor on public television.”

She referenced Merz’s interview with a media outlet earlier this month, in which he stated that “our suspicion is that Russia is behind most of these drone launches” and described the UAVs as a “serious threat to our security.”

The timing of the interview followed reports from German police that a drone event at Frankfurt airport had been caused by a local UAV hobbyist.

Additionally, allegations of drone sightings near a military base in northern Germany in early October were dismissed by the Bundeswehr, which confirmed that “there were no registered drone overflights” in the region, “contrary to the media reports.”
