US to deploy enormous army contingent to area near Venezuela

(MENAFN) The United States has reportedly gathered a substantial military force near Venezuela, with around 10,000 soldiers and 6,000 sailors positioned in the region, according to reports. Analysts suggest the move may signal Washington’s intention to broaden its operations in the Caribbean.

For months, US officials have accused Venezuela of supporting “narcoterrorists” and have enforced severe economic sanctions against the country. Since September, American forces have struck several vessels said to be involved in drug trafficking.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has rejected these accusations, claiming Washington is “fabricating a new war” while steadily increasing its military presence nearby.

Reports indicate that the US has already deployed eight Navy warships, a special operations ship, and a nuclear-powered submarine to the Caribbean. The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier is expected to join them next week, accompanied by three additional ships and more than 4,000 service members.

Further evidence shows that F-35 fighter jets have been stationed at a US base in Puerto Rico, according to satellite imagery cited by analysts.

Experts note that the deployment of the carrier group could point to plans extending beyond counter-narcotics efforts. Ryan Berg, a director at a leading US policy institute, said that President Donald Trump has roughly a month to make “a major decision” before the naval group would have to move elsewhere.

In recent weeks, various media outlets have suggested that the White House is assessing possible military options against Venezuela. Senator Rick Scott stated last Sunday that Maduro’s “days are numbered.” Reports also claim that Washington has identified several potential targets, including sites allegedly connected to drug operations.

When questioned about the buildup, Trump denied the reports, saying, “No. It’s not true.” However, last month he confirmed authorizing the CIA to conduct lethal covert missions in the region.
