Strong Quake Rocks Türkiye's Western Balikesir Province

(MENAFN) A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked western Türkiye's Balikesir province during late evening hours Monday, sending terrified residents fleeing into the streets, officials confirmed.

The tremor struck the Sindirgi district at 10:48 p.m. local time (1948 GMT), according to Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), the nation's primary disaster response authority, which announced the incident via X.

A broadcast footage capturing panicked civilians scrambling outdoors as violent shaking rattled the region. Online video clips appeared to document multiple structural collapses throughout the affected zone.

Seismic waves rippled across neighboring provinces, with shockwaves reported in Istanbul, Bursa, and Izmir.

Emergency response units were immediately mobilized to evaluate potential fatalities and infrastructure destruction, the broadcaster confirmed.

The same district suffered a devastating 6.1-magnitude earthquake in August that claimed one life and left 29 individuals wounded.
