Germany Mulls Including War Preparedness Lessons in School Curricula

(MENAFN) Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has called for lessons on crisis and war preparedness to be included in school curricula, reflecting mounting unease over Russia’s actions.

A member of the center-right CSU, Dobrindt told Handelsblatt that he intends to bring up the proposal at next month’s gathering of interior ministers from Germany’s federal states.

"My proposal is that in one school year, students in upper grade levels spend two consecutive class periods discussing what threat scenarios might exist and how to prepare for them," Dobrindt said.

He emphasized the broader impact on households, noting that children can act as “important knowledge carriers” who help raise awareness among family members.

The minister’s comments arrive amid rising tensions between European nations and Russia, as US President Donald Trump’s recent efforts to broker a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow have stalled.

Dobrindt, a conservative, has accused Russia of conducting a "hybrid war" against Germany and its European allies, employing disinformation campaigns, influence operations, cyberattacks, and sabotage.

Concerns over Russia’s military capabilities have prompted German leaders to warn that the nation must be “fit for war” by 2029. Earlier this year, German Chief of Defense General Carsten Breuer cautioned that Russia could potentially launch an attack on a NATO member state within four to seven years.
