US-China Trade Talks Continue in Malaysia
(MENAFN) Top officials from China and the United States resumed trade discussions on Sunday in Malaysia, marking the second day of negotiations.
This meeting coincided with President Donald Trump’s commencement of a three-nation tour of Asia, during which he is set to meet with President Xi Jinping.
The recent round of talks between the world’s two largest economies began on Saturday, just one day before the opening of the ASEAN summit, which took place in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
The discussions are aimed at resolving ongoing trade issues and came ahead of the summit.
The Chinese delegation was headed by Vice Premier He Lifeng, while the US side was led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
This meeting represents the fifth round of negotiations between the two nations, following previous talks held in Geneva, London, Stockholm, and Madrid.
In remarks made to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer shared that the two countries were “getting to a point where we have something we can present to the leaders for their consideration.”
In August, the US and China had reached a temporary ceasefire in their ongoing tariff disputes, agreeing to hold off on additional tariff increases until November 10.
This truce marked the third instance of tariff reductions after Trump initially raised tariffs on Chinese goods by as much as 145%, while China had previously increased tariffs on American goods by up to 125%.
“We talked about extending the truce, we talked about rare earths, of course, we talked about all kinds of topics. And I think that we're getting to a spot where the leaders will have a very productive meeting this coming week,” Greer stated, according to a video of his remarks.
