Lula Reports "Guaranteed" Trade Deal with US

(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced on Monday that a trade agreement with the United States is now "guaranteed" after his meeting with President Donald Trump.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Malaysia.

Speaking at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Lula expressed confidence that a deal would be reached sooner than many anticipated, despite Trump not offering any formal promises during their discussion.

Lula also addressed the issue of Venezuela, stating that he raised the topic with Trump. "I told him that it would be extremely important to take into account Brazil's expense as the largest country in South America, as the most important economic country of South America," Lula said.

He emphasized that Brazil could play a significant role in aiding the US with its approach to Venezuela, a nation that Trump has accused of harboring drug-trafficking activities under the leadership of President Nicolas Maduro.

In addition, Lula expressed support for Malaysia’s bid to become a full member of the BRICS group, which consists of 11 countries.

On social media platform X, Lula shared that his meeting with Trump was "great" and highlighted the productive nature of their discussions.

"We discussed the bilateral trade and economic agenda in a frank and constructive manner," he wrote.

He also mentioned that both sides agreed to convene their teams immediately to address ongoing issues related to tariffs and sanctions imposed on Brazilian authorities.
