Russia values Trump’s efforts to solve Russia-Ukraine conflict

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has expressed appreciation for U.S. President Donald Trump’s determination to help end the conflict in Ukraine, though it maintains that such a complex issue cannot be solved rapidly. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, Russia believes that the underlying causes of the war must be properly addressed before any genuine progress toward peace can be achieved.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Peskov remarked that “Trump’s sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine, surely brings out only positive feelings, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has said that repeatedly.” He went on to caution, however, that “sometimes such excessive haste actually sharply contrasts with reality, because a conflict like the Ukraine one… is so complex that it cannot be resolved overnight.”

Peskov noted that peace talks remain on hold for now, saying that Kyiv and its European allies have shown little interest in restarting negotiations.

When asked about the possibility of another meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump—an idea reportedly raised following their recent phone conversation—Peskov explained that such a summit should only occur when it serves a clear purpose. He emphasized that both leaders are reluctant to meet without concrete groundwork.

According to him, the two presidents have instructed their foreign ministers, Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio, to prepare the basis for potential discussions. “The process is complex and requires both sides to do substantial preparatory work before top-level negotiations can take place,” Peskov stated.

Earlier this month, Trump urged for an immediate cessation of hostilities along existing front lines, suggesting that Moscow and Kyiv should “leave it the way it is right now” and discuss further arrangements “something later on.” Lavrov responded that Moscow’s objective remains achieving a “long-term, sustainable peace,” rather than an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”

On Thursday, Putin indicated that a meeting with Trump could still occur in the future. Trump echoed that sentiment two days later, telling reporters that “you have to know that we’re going to make a deal, I’m not going to be wasting my time.”
