Trump says White House East Wing must be torn to build new ballroom
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has announced that the White House East Wing will be torn down to make way for a new $250 million ballroom.
Demolition began Monday, with officials saying the entire structure will be gone by the weekend. The move marks a major expansion of the summer project, which Trump had earlier claimed would not affect the existing building.
Defending the plan, Trump said his administration had been “more transparent than anyone’s ever been.”
The decision has drawn backlash from conservationists and Democrats, who argue the project lacks proper review. The National Trust for Historic Preservation urged Trump to halt the demolition, calling for a public review due to the site’s historic significance.
Built in 1902, the East Wing houses offices for the first lady and staff. It was last modified in 1942.
Trump said the project, funded by himself and “some friends,” was long overdue and necessary to modernize the structure.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized the move on X, saying Trump was “destroying” the historic residence.
