Guernsey faces fierce storm causing floods, debris on roads

(MENAFN) Storm Benjamin caused widespread flooding, fallen trees, and debris on roads across the Channel Islands following heavy overnight rain and strong winds.

Guernsey Police reported that the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre received multiple reports of surface water and debris, including caddy bins and tree branches, blocking streets.

Flooding was particularly noted near the Ville au Roi roundabout by the Mount Row traffic lights. Meanwhile, Jersey authorities confirmed that 10 trees were brought down overnight by gale-force winds.

Officials urged drivers to adjust speeds and remain alert to splash hazards and unexpected obstacles. Tristen Dodd, associate director for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure at the Government of Jersey, warned that blocked drains, fallen branches, or even additional trees could appear on roads.

The Jersey Met Office issued a warning for wind speeds up to 70 knots (80.5 mph) over the Channel Islands shipping area. Overnight gusts reached 59 mph at Jersey Airport and 56 mph at Guernsey Airport.

Travel services were also impacted, with several ferry cancellations reported by Jersey Ports and Guernsey Harbours. Guernsey Airport noted delays for some flights, including departures to Alderney with Aurigny. Precautionary measures by Jersey Water led to the closure of the Queens Valley and Val de la Mare reservoirs until at least Friday morning.
