U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate halt to fighting between Russia and Ukraine along current front lines, urging both sides to stop the bloodshed and move toward negotiations.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said he wanted Moscow and Kyiv to“stop killing people and get it done,” adding that discussions over the details of territorial arrangements could be resolved in future peace talks.

The U.S. president acknowledged that defining borders and sovereignty would be“very difficult,” but maintained that a ceasefire was essential to end civilian suffering and stabilize the region.

Kyiv has repeatedly insisted it will not accept any deal that leaves occupied territories in Russian hands. Trump, however, said last month that Ukraine could“militarily prevail” and eventually reclaim areas including Crimea and eastern Ukraine.

Trump, who has vowed to swiftly end the nearly three-year war, is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest in the coming weeks to discuss potential diplomatic frameworks.

The U.S. leader also met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last week, where he said a“flexible approach” from both sides could create conditions for peace.

Analysts say Trump's remarks mark one of the clearest signals yet of Washington's renewed diplomatic engagement on Ukraine, though many remain skeptical about Russia's willingness to negotiate.

Observers warn that while calls for a ceasefire may ease immediate tensions, any durable settlement will depend on how Kyiv's sovereignty and territorial integrity are guaranteed in future talks.
