Russia's Foreign Ministry said diplomats are working on“very precise and serious” preparations for a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the TASS news agency on Sunday that contact between the two leaders has already taken place, and details were shared by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.

Following the leaders' phone call, Zakharova said, the foreign ministers of Russia and Hungary held talks to coordinate logistics and timing for the upcoming summit.

Trump earlier said after his phone conversation with Putin that both sides had agreed to meet soon in Budapest, Hungary's capital.

In response, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reportedly ordered the formation of a special committee to oversee the organization and security of the high-profile summit.

If held, the meeting would mark the first face-to-face encounter between the two presidents since Trump's return to the White House, and comes amid renewed tensions between Moscow and Washington over global security issues.

Analysts say Budapest, a NATO member with close ties to Moscow, could serve as a symbolic venue for dialogue between Russia and the United States as both nations seek to test the prospects of limited cooperation.
