Macron Pledges to Increase Humanitarian Efforts for Gaza

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron pledged a significant increase in humanitarian efforts for Gaza following the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in Egypt.

Addressing reporters at the airport Monday, Macron expressed satisfaction over the maintained ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and the release of 20 living Israeli hostages by the Palestinian faction.

He confirmed, "all of the hostages had been released," and stated that aid operations in Gaza had commenced "with greater intensity than planned," emphasizing that humanitarian assistance would accelerate starting Tuesday.

Macron further committed that France will collaborate closely with the United States and Israel to guarantee the uninterrupted and unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza.

He announced an upcoming humanitarian aid conference aimed at Gaza as part of the ceasefire’s initial phase, adding, "in the second phase, funds will be mobilized to rapidly restart the stabilization and reconstruction of Gaza."

Addressing ongoing uncertainties about Gaza’s governance, Macron noted the UN Security Council had reached a consensus involving the Palestinian Authority and other states to move toward a resolution, with technical work on disarming Hamas set to begin soon.

Last week, US President Donald Trump revealed that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of a plan he proposed on Sept. 29, which calls for a ceasefire, the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. This first phase took effect Friday.

The second phase involves creating a new governing body in Gaza, deploying a multinational force, and disarming Hamas.

Earlier Monday, the process of releasing Palestinians detained in Israeli jails began following Hamas’s release of all 20 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have killed over 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza, predominantly women and children, leaving the territory largely uninhabitable.
