Gaza Peace Summit Set to Kick Off in Egypt

(MENAFN) World leaders will gather in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday for a pivotal summit aimed at cementing a ceasefire agreement to end the war in Gaza, the Egyptian Presidency confirmed on Saturday.

The high-level meeting will be jointly led by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump. Heads of state and senior officials from more than 20 nations are expected to attend, according to the official statement.

Designed to halt the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the summit will also focus on advancing peace efforts and ushering in a new era of stability across the Middle East, the presidency said.

A truce brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye, and the United States took effect on Friday after three days of intense negotiations held in Sharm el-Sheikh. Talks involved representatives from both Israel and Hamas.

The initial stage of the agreement includes a withdrawal of Israeli forces from major urban centers in Gaza — specifically Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis, and the northern region — alongside the reopening of five aid corridors and a phased release of hostages and detainees.

A Hamas official stated Friday that the Rafah border crossing with Egypt is likely to reopen by midweek, allowing restricted civilian movement. Operational specifics have yet to be disclosed.

More than two years of Israeli military campaigns have left Gaza in ruins, with over 67,000 lives lost and widespread famine conditions, according to health authorities in Gaza.
