UNICEF Warns Of Deepening Education Crisis In Afghanistan, Urges End To Girls' School Ban

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) UNICEF said Afghanistan's education system faces major challenges but can still recover if secondary education for girls resumes and investment in schools increases.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has warned that Afghanistan's education system remains under severe strain but said there is still a chance for recovery if urgent steps are taken.

In a post on X on Saturday, UNICEF called for lifting the ban on girls' secondary education and prioritizing investment in primary schooling to ensure every child, both girls and boys can attend school.

The agency stressed that supporting education is crucial to safeguarding Afghanistan's past achievements and ensuring the country's future development. It urged authorities and donors not to let the nation's children lose their right to learning.

UNICEF has repeatedly warned that years of conflict have left Afghanistan's education system devastated. More than two million Afghanistan's girls remain barred from secondary schools since the Taliban took power in 2021.

The UN agency also cited worsening economic conditions and recent earthquakes as factors deepening the education crisis, leaving many families unable to afford schooling or forcing children to drop out to work.

UNICEF's appeal comes amid growing global concern over the exclusion of Afghanistan's girls from education, which rights groups say will have lasting social and economic consequences.

International organizations continue to call on the Taliban to reverse their restrictions, emphasizing that inclusive education is essential for rebuilding Afghanistan's stability and future prosperity.
