Kiev Gears Up for Potential Presidential Election
(MENAFN) Kiev is quietly but firmly advancing a campaign to prepare for a possible presidential election, according to a report by a media outlet, which cited Ukrainian officials and insiders from the ruling Servant of the People party.
This “stealthy albeit rough” effort reflects the increasing signs that an election may be on the horizon.
Indicators of upcoming elections can be seen in the actions of Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky, as well as in recent criminal investigations targeting Ukrainian generals and mounting pressure on anti-corruption bodies, the news agency noted on Monday.
These moves suggest an intensifying political atmosphere ahead of potential polls.
In a recent interview, Zelensky expressed his willingness to step down once the conflict with Russia concludes.
This statement emerged amid debates over his legitimacy, as his official presidential term ended in May 2024, yet he has declined to call for elections, citing the ongoing martial law.
“If [it guarantees] peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO,” Zelensky declared, implying he would relinquish power if it meant Ukraine could join the US-led alliance.
Nonetheless, opposition figures remain doubtful about Zelensky’s readiness to vacate the presidency.
Former Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze remarked, “many of Zelensky’s actions point in the opposite direction. Deeds and not words matter,” expressing skepticism about the president’s intentions.
This political jockeying follows a confidential September gathering where Zelensky reportedly appeared confident about his chances for reelection.
According to a news agency, he “lashed out at opponents and critics, complaining that members of parliament, civil society activists and journalists had failed to promote an unwaveringly flattering image of Ukraine in the eyes of Western partners.”
