U.S. Ends Sanctions Waiver For Iran's Chabahar Port, Impacting India's Strategic Projects

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The United States has revoked sanctions waivers for Iran's Chabahar Port, threatening India's vital regional connectivity projects and raising strategic concerns over Afghanistan and Central Asia access routes.
The U.S. State Department has announced the cancellation of the sanctions waiver for Iran's Chabahar Port, which officially came into effect on Monday.

According to India Today, the waiver had been granted in 2018 to facilitate Afghanistan's reconstruction. Its removal now brings all Indian firms engaged in the project under U.S. sanctions.

A spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is“assessing the implications” of the new restrictions and their possible impact on ongoing projects.

Chabahar holds strategic importance for India as it connects the country to Afghanistan and Central Asia while counterbalancing Pakistan's Gwadar Port, developed with Chinese investment.

Last year, India signed a $370 million, 10-year agreement to expand Chabahar, underscoring its long-term commitment to the project despite regional and geopolitical challenges.

Analysts warn that Washington's move could strain U.S.–India relations, particularly at a time when both countries are seeking deeper strategic cooperation to counter China's influence in the region.

The future of Chabahar's development now depends on how India balances its strategic interests with the risks posed by U.S. sanctions and regional power competition.
