Dr. Robert Muggah is a globally recognized expert in international security and organized crime. He has more than two decades of experience working with international agencies such as the UNODC, Interpol, and development banks such as the IMF and World Bank in mapping arms and drugs trafficking networks, cartel and gang networks, and money laundering and illicit financial flows. He is currently supporting the UN leadership to define a "common approach" to organized crime and an expert group mandated by the Security Council to monitor illegal flows to Haiti. He regularly contributes to flagship reports on global homicide, environmental crime, and cybercrime. Dr. Muggah has led investigations with UNODC and other institutions into cartels, mafia and militia across all 8 countries of the Amazon Basin, Central America, Mexico and the US, the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and Southeast Asia. He has also worked with national and city governments as well as the private sector and civil society groups to develop comprehensive strategies to deter and disrupt organized crime. He has written over 100 peer-review articles and opeds on the dynamics of organized crime spanning the Americas, Africa, Europe, and South and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Robert Muggah is a specialist in cities, technology, security and migration and associate faculty member at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and Singularity University and affiliated with the University of Princeton. He is principal of the SecDev Group, a cyber-security and digital risk firm. He co-founded the non-profit Igarapé Institute where he oversees activities on public, digital and climate security. Robert is affiliated with the University of Oxford and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, in Switzerland, as well as the Bosch Foundation, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and the World Economic Forum's Cities and Urbanization Council and Global Risk Report. His work on climate action, new technology and fragile cities has been featured in the BBC, CNN, Economist, FastCompany, New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, Wired and hundreds of others and he is a regular contributor to the Atlantic, El Pais, Financial Times, Foreign Policy, the Globe and Mail, Guardian, New York Times. He has spoken at TED (2015, 2017, 2019), the World Economic Forum Summit in Davos, the Web Summit, and dozens of venues around the world. He is the other of eight books, including Terra Incognita - 100 Maps to Survive the Next 100 years (Penguin/Random House 2020).
