EU Vows Stronger Defense Alliance with Ukraine
(MENAFN) European leaders have committed to enhancing military collaboration with Ukraine, cautioning that Russia’s escalating assaults represent an increasing danger to Europe.
During a shared press briefing, European Council President Antonio Costa declared that the upcoming summit on October 23–24 would be a pivotal moment.
He emphasized, “In two weeks, the European Commission will present the roadmap on 2030 defense readiness, and the European Council will meet again in three weeks, and that will be decision time,” signaling that critical choices regarding European defense strategy are imminent.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a stark warning about Russia’s intentions, stating that the country is “threatening us, testing us, and they will not stop.”
She underlined the urgency of amplifying assistance for Kyiv, noting, “First of all, we have to step up our financial support for Ukraine.”
Frederiksen highlighted the broader significance of the conflict, affirming, “Everybody knows now what is at stake…our main goal is to build a Europe so strong that war is simply not an option.”
One of the more contentious subjects under discussion has been European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s concept of a “drone wall,” aimed at addressing the increasing deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern combat.
She voiced support for member nations whose airspace has been breached, such as Poland, Romania, Estonia, and most recently, Denmark.
“These violations are part of hybrid war tactics, and these are threats that demand a strong and determined reaction and answer from Europe,” she said. Von der Leyen underscored the necessity of comprehensive security across the bloc, declaring, “Every European citizen and every square centimeter in Europe has to be safe.”
