School Collapses in Indonesia, Leaving Over Ninety Students Trapped
(MENAFN) At least 91 students remain trapped beneath the debris of a collapsed boarding school building in East Java, Indonesia, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) updated its initial report, which had estimated 38 missing individuals. "Student attendance records showed 91 people are still buried beneath debris as of Wednesday morning," a BNPB spokesperson disclosed.
The collapse was triggered when the foundation pillars failed under the strain of a newly constructed fourth floor, BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari explained.
A joint search and rescue operation involving 332 personnel—including local disaster teams, police, and military—has been mobilized, according to a BNPB statement.
Heavy equipment is on standby but has yet to be deployed due to concerns that vibrations might cause further structural failure.
The incident took place on Tuesday at Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School, as hundreds of students assembled for prayers, reported the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Authorities rescued 102 individuals, while three were confirmed dead following the collapse.
Of those injured, 77 were hospitalized, with 26 currently receiving treatment and others having been discharged.
