Trump Administration Cuts Funding to Federal Watchdog Council
(MENAFN) The Trump administration is withdrawing financial support from the Council of Inspectors General, a federal oversight organization that helps monitor government waste and misconduct, effective Wednesday, as reported by various media outlets.
Known formally as the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), this council offers training, data analysis, and investigative resources to federal oversight personnel.
Experts warn that eliminating its funding could significantly weaken inspectors general, leaving them without essential shared resources needed to detect waste, fraud, and abuse, according to the reports.
CIGIE operates as an independent body within the executive branch, charged with tackling issues related to “integrity, economy, and effectiveness issues that transcend individual government agencies,” as stated on its official website.
A message displayed on the council’s website reads: “Due to a lack of apportionment of funds, this website is currently unavailable.”
A representative from the White House Office of Management and Budget told a news agency that inspectors general had become “corrupt, partisan, and, in some cases, have lied to the public,” further stating: "The American people will no longer be funding this corruption."
In a separate declaration, former CIGIE chair Mark Greenblatt cautioned that the funding cuts would leave inspectors “isolated” and “severely compromised.”
Mike Ware, who previously served as inspector general for the Small Business Administration, expressed that the decision would dismantle vital platforms for government transparency.
