S. Korea’s Lee Seeks Robust Defense System to Secure Lasting Peace
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae-myung declared on Wednesday a firm commitment to securing peace through a powerful and self-reliant defense system, underscoring the nation’s need to strengthen its military capabilities.
“Achieving peace is possible on a strong foundation of security, and the most reliable form of security is a state of no conflict being necessary, in other words, peace,” Lee stated during a speech commemorating the 77th anniversary of Armed Forces Day.
He warned that without peace, democratic progress and economic growth are mere illusions, stressing, “it will be difficult to protect people's lives and safety if a country has no power.”
Lee outlined plans to establish a “smart, elite, strong force” by integrating cutting-edge manned and unmanned weaponry, including artificial intelligence-powered combat robots, autonomous drones, and precision missile systems for both attack and defense.
The president also announced South Korea’s intention to reclaim wartime operational control of its military forces from the United States, aiming to spearhead a joint defense strategy with Washington. This control was initially transferred to the U.S.-led UN Command during the Korean War in 1950 and has remained with the U.S. during wartime, while Seoul regained peacetime command in 1994.
In addition, Lee promised vigorous support for the domestic defense industry, aiming to boost national security and economic development in tandem. He emphasized enhancing soldiers' welfare and morale as key priorities.
