U.S. Senate Votes Down Democratic-Led Funding Bill

(MENAFN) The US Senate on Tuesday rejected a Democratic-led stopgap funding bill, edging the nation closer to a potential government shutdown as current funding expires at midnight.

The chamber voted 47-53, strictly along party lines, against advancing the measure that bundled government funding extensions with approximately $1 trillion in health care initiatives. The bill fell short of the 60 votes required for progress.

Lawmakers now face a midnight deadline to reach a funding agreement.

Democrats aimed to incorporate health care reforms within the budget, including a rollback of elements from President Donald Trump's landmark tax law that cut Medicaid funding and a continuation of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, America’s near-universal health care framework.

Conversely, Republicans insist on a "clean" continuing resolution, rejecting any amendments to current spending levels.
