Trump Reiterates Claim Of Stopping India-Pakistan War With 'Trade Threat', Says He 'Saved Millions Of Lives'

(MENAFN- Live Mint) US President Donald Trump once again reiterated his claim of having halted a war between India and Pakistan, saying he used trade as leverage to de-escalate tensions. Recalling the episode, he said that when he warned India and Pakistan he would halt trade if they went to war, the response was,“no, no, no, you cannot,” to which he replied,“yes I can,” while maintaining that his intervention saved millions of lives by stopping the conflict from escalating.

Donald Trump said,“India and Pakistan were going at it. I called them both... I said, if you do this, there's not going to be any trade, and I stopped the war. It was raging for four days... The Prime Minister of Pakistan was here, along with the Field Marshal [Asim Munir], who's a very important guy in Pakistan.”

Donald Trump also quoted the Pakistani leadership praising him for“saving millions of lives because he [Trump] saved the war from going on.”

“I didn't even realise it was as beautiful as he said it. He said to a group of people that were with us... that this man saved millions of lives because he saved the war from going on. That war was going to get very bad,” Donald Trump said. Also Read | Trump says he should get Nobel Prize for ending 'seven wars', including India-Pakistan conflict

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he prevented the India-Pakistan conflict by warning both countries that he would halt trade with them. While Pakistan formally recommended Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize , citing his“decisive diplomatic intervention,” India has categorically denied any mediation from the US President.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir last week met Donald Trump in the White House. Shehbaz Sharif was in the US for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Before meeting the two, Donald again claimed that he has stopped seven wars. Donald Trump repeated the claim in his address to world leaders at the UNGA.

At UNGA, Trump claimed of ending the“unendable” India-Pakistan conflict and six others, asserting that his efforts helped ease tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Donald Trump also criticised the United Nations for what he said its“empty words”.
