Overall Crimes Against Women In J & K Dip 7.21%

Srinagar- Crimes against women in Jammu and Kashmir have seen a decline over the past two years, but the Union Territory continues to lead in cyber crimes targeting women, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2023 report.

The total number of crimes against women fell 7.21%, from 3,937 cases in 2021 to 3,653 cases in 2023. Despite the overall decline, Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest number of cyber crimes against women among all Union Territories, with 43 cases reported. These included 39 incidents of transmitting sexually explicit content and 4 cases of blackmailing or morphing images of victims, surpassing Delhi, which recorded 36 cyber crime cases.

Kidnapping remained the most common crime against women, with 895 cases in 2023. Domestic violence (cruelty by husband) followed with 524 cases, while rape cases dropped from 315 in 2021 to 231 in 2023, including one minor victim. Attempted rape cases fell dramatically, from 1,400 in 2021 to just 2 cases in 2023.

The NCRB report revealed that 427 women were abducted to force them into marriage, including 10 minors. There were 7 cases of human trafficking involving 31 victims, and only one case of rape and murder was registered in 2023. Notably, there were no dowry deaths or acid attacks reported during the year.

Assault with intent to outrage modesty was reported in 1,542 cases, and 31 cases of abetment to suicide involving 39 women victims were recorded.
