Charlie Kirk Shooting Suspect To Return To Utah Court In October

(MENAFN- Live Mint) (Bloomberg) -- The 22-year-old man accused of killing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk earlier this month will appear in a Utah court Oct. 30, after a judge granted a request from his defense lawyer for more time to review“voluminous” evidence state prosecutors have compiled.

“There is a substantial amount of discovery in this case,” Chad Grunander, a prosecutor in the Utah County Attorney's office, told the judge Monday in a court session to determine whether there was enough evidence to waive a preliminary hearing and go straight to trial.

Tyler James Robinson faces a possible death penalty in connection with Kirk's shooting. His court-appointed lawyer, Kathryn Nester, told Judge Tony F. Graf that she plans to seek a preliminary hearing, but wanted more time to review the evidence and asked for a delay in the waiver hearing. Graf granted the request.

Robinson was charged with first-degree aggravated murder, felony discharge of a gun causing injury, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.

If convicted, Robinson faces 25 years to life in prison for these charges if he avoids the death penalty. Robinson has yet to enter a plea to the charges against him and is not expected to do so until the court schedules an arraignment. He monitored Monday's court session virtually from jail.

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on Sept. 10 while speaking at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. He was known for starting Turning Point USA, a group dedicated to rallying young voters to conservative causes, and had a key role in energizing young voters to support President Donald Trump's bids for office.
