Critical Situation At Zaporizhzhia NPP: Sybiha And Grossi Discuss Threats To Nuclear Safety

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) The Ukrainian Foreign Minister made this statement on social media , according to Ukrinform.

"I had a meeting with Rafael Grossi about the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Russia's terrorist actions. The Director General provided an update on current critical threats to nuclear safety at the plant," Ukrainian Foreign Minister stated.

Sybiha stressed that Russia had seized the Ukrainian nuclear power plant and was trying to forcibly integrate it into its energy system, despite the growing risk of a nuclear incident. The Foreign Minister and the IAEA Director General agreed that the world could not allow this to happen.

"We believe the temporary IAEA stewardship mechanism over the Zaporizhzhia NPP is the only realistic option left in the short term. Ukraine's position remains unchanged: the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must be returned to its rightful owner, Ukraine, as soon as possible," the Minister emphasized.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid for six days, posing risks to nuclear and radiation safety.

On September 23, the last external power line to the ZNPP was disconnecte . The backup line had already been cut by Russian forces in May, and since then, the occupiers have not provided security guarantees for repair crews from NPC Ukrenergo to carry out restoration.

Energoatom stated that the external power line to the Zaporizhzhia NPP on territory controlled by Ukraine is working. Russia is deliberately refusing to reconnect the plant to the power supply, continuing a large-scale disinformation campaign against Ukraine.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said that Russia has laid 200 kilometers of power transmission lines in preparation for an attempt to“steal” the Zaporizhzhia NPP, connect it to its own power grid, and restart it. The environmental NGO Greenpeace emphasized that the occupiers may exploit the current blackout at the ZNPP to achieve this.
