U.S. Reaffirms Commitment to Leading Global AI Advancements
(MENAFN) The United States on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to leading global artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, citing the vast potential for economic growth and bolstering national security.
During an open debate on AI and international peace and security at the United Nations Security Council, Michael Kratsios, Policy Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology, underscored the importance of maintaining a competitive edge in AI. "The United States is committed to creating, promoting and protecting the most innovative AI ecosystem in the world," Kratsios declared.
Kratsios emphasized that AI "is set to define the future of economic growth, national security and global competitiveness." He continued, "The Trump administration believes it is our responsibility to ensure this technology's development benefits all of our fellow citizens, safeguards their liberty and way of life and protects our next generation."
Addressing the potential of AI's "dual-use" nature, Kratsios cautioned, "AI technology will have revolutionary applications for war and for peace. But the improper use of AI systems can erode deterrence, create destabilizing effects and reinforce systems of political control and social engineering."
He praised American companies for leading AI advancements, asserting, "They are advancing the reliability and usefulness of AI systems held to the highest standards of our commercial sector."
Kratsios also rejected efforts by international bodies to regulate AI through centralized governance, stating: "We totally reject all efforts by international bodies to assert centralized control and global governance of AI." He added, "We believe that the responsible diffusion of AI will help pave the way to a flourishing future, one of increased productivity, empowered individuals and revolutions in scientific advancement."
Warning against overregulation, Kratsios argued that it "incentivizes centralization, stifles innovation and increases the danger that these tools will be used for tyranny and conquest." He further criticized ideological focuses on social equity, climate, and existential risks as "dangers to progress and obstacles to responsibly harnessing this technology as an extension of human ingenuity and capacities."
Kratsios outlined the U.S. vision for global collaboration, emphasizing that Washington aims to establish American AI as the global gold standard. This strategy would allow allies and trade partners to develop their own sovereign AI ecosystems, supported by secure American technology.
Kratsios called on other nations to join in creating an AI ecosystem that "promotes mutual prosperity and security," blending technological leadership with diplomacy and international cooperation.
