International Aid Flotilla Heads to Gaza

(MENAFN) An international aid flotilla is nearing the Gaza Strip in an effort to break the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory, organizers announced on Monday.

“We are 570 kilometers (307.7 nautical miles) away from reaching Gaza,” stated the International Committee for Breaking the Siege on Gaza via the US social media platform X.

Tony La Piccirella, an Italian activist affiliated with the Global Sumud Flotilla, shared in a video message that they expect to reach the same location on Tuesday where previous aid vessels, Madleen and Handala, were intercepted by Israeli naval forces during past attempts to break the siege and deliver humanitarian assistance.

On July 26, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Handala aid ship as it approached Gaza’s coastline and redirected it to Ashdod Port.

The ship had managed to get approximately 70 nautical miles from Gaza, surpassing the distance traveled by the Madleen, which had been halted at 110 miles from the enclave.

On Monday, a contingent of activists joined the Global Sumud Flotilla from the Mediterranean, while two additional vessels are set to join from the Greek Cypriot Administration and Türkiye.

According to La Piccirella, the flotilla’s largest ship, carrying 100 people, will depart on Tuesday.

La Piccirella also mentioned that beyond the Italian and Spanish naval ships providing escort for the flotilla, three other nations are considering dispatching additional military vessels, though he did not disclose their identities.
