Amman, Sept. 29 (Petra) -- A new seismic monitoring station has been established in Petra, expanding Jordan's national earthquake observation network to 24 stations and strengthening efforts to safeguard the country's people and heritage sites.
The initiative, launched by the Jordan Seismological Observatory (JSO) under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, aims to deliver faster and more accurate tracking of seismic activity in the Petra region and beyond.
"This station is a critical addition to our network," said JSO Director Ghassan Sweidan. "Its proximity to the Dead Sea Fault makes it especially valuable for monitoring seismic movements in one of Jordan's most sensitive and historically significant areas."
Installed by a specialized technical team, the new facility was supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in cooperation with the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority.
Officials noted that the project not only enhances disaster preparedness but also supports Petra's status as a secure global destination, reassuring tourists and researchers alike.
