IPC Votes to Reinstate Russia’s Paralympic Committee

(MENAFN) The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has decided not to extend Russia’s suspension, enabling athletes with disabilities from the country to compete representing their nation’s flag once again.

Following the intensification of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, Russia and Belarus faced bans from both the Olympics and Paralympics, along with other prominent sporting competitions.

Subsequently, exceptions were granted for individual competitors, some of whom were permitted to participate under a neutral banner.

On Saturday, the IPC announced that its members, during the organization’s General Assembly held in Seoul, South Korea, voted against continuing the partial suspension imposed on the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC).

In the final tally, 91 delegates favored removing all restrictions on Moscow, while 77 opposed and eight abstained.

The official statement declared, “This decision means NPC (national Paralympic committee) Russia now regain their full rights and privileges of IPC membership... The IPC will work with NPC Russia to put practical arrangements in place for this as soon as reasonably possible.”
