Trump Comments on Church Shooting in Michigan
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has strongly criticized a tragic shooting incident that took place at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday, which resulted in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the shooting as a “targeted attack on Christians”, linking it to what he referred to as an “epidemic of violence” spreading across the nation.
In his message, Trump emphasized that while the attacker was no longer alive, many questions still remained.
He asserted, “The suspect is dead, but there is still a lot to learn. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”
He also issued an urgent call for action: “THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!”
The violent episode unfolded at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the city of Grand Blanc, shortly after the Sunday morning service commenced.
According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye, the assault began around 10:25am when a 40-year-old man drove his vehicle through the church’s main entrance and began firing an assault rifle at the worshippers inside.
Law enforcement arrived quickly on the scene and confronted the attacker, who was ultimately killed during the exchange of gunfire, Chief Renye stated during a press briefing.
He reported that ten individuals with gunshot wounds were taken to nearby hospitals, including one who was already deceased upon arrival.
A second person later died from their injuries, he added.
Additionally, Chief Renye mentioned that a fire had broken out at the scene and that investigators suspect it was intentionally started by the same individual.
“There was a fire that occurred, and we believe that that was deliberately set by this suspect,” he explained.
