Eric Adams Withdraws from NYC Mayoral Race
(MENAFN) New York City Mayor Eric Adams abruptly ended his campaign for reelection on Sunday, more than a month before voters head to the polls.
"Despite all we've achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign," Adams declared in a video posted on the social media platform X.
He cited ongoing media scrutiny and a significant setback from the campaign finance board as critical factors: "The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board's decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign," Adams explained.
Elected in 2022 as the Democratic leader of the nation’s largest city, Adams confirmed he will complete his current term, which runs through January 1, 2026. "I will continue to fight for this city," he emphasized.
Adams' tenure was marred by legal challenges last spring when federal prosecutors accused him of soliciting donations from Turkish nationals and trading favors to benefit wealthy contributors. Those charges were ultimately dismissed earlier this year.
Polling data shows Adams lagging far behind his Democratic challenger, state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, with his support stuck in the single digits.
Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, secured a surprising win over Cuomo in the June Democratic primary. Cuomo has since launched an independent campaign.
With Adams out, the mayoral race is now largely expected to be a showdown between Mamdani and Cuomo. A Quinnipiac University poll indicated that Cuomo could close the gap if Adams exited the race.
The New York City mayoral election is scheduled for November 4.
