“Shining Shanghai” (Jing'an) International Light Art Open Call Concluded Successfully
This year's Open Call, themed Luminescent Roots: Stories of Home, invited artists to transform the DNA of local communities into a shared“language of light art” through projection mapping. The global submission phase ran from May 1 to July 5, attracting 154 works from 145 artists and teams representing 32 countries and regions across six continents. More than half of the participants were past award-winners at leading international festivals such as Tokyo's 1 Minute Projection Mapping Competition, iMapp Romania, and the Berlin Festival of Lights. After review, 20 outstanding works advanced to the final jury.
The 2025 Jury Panel was chaired by Teng Junjie, with Jin Jiangbo, Gill Minervini, and Tang Hao as vice-chairs. Eleven international experts-including Joshua Bernard, Mikaël Frascadore, Xiaohui Wang, and Tango-served as professional jury members. Together, under the supervision of the Supervisory Panel, they evaluated the works based on concept, architectural integration, visual aesthetics, and technical execution.
According to Chairman Teng Junjie, the Open Call-rooted in Jing'an yet global in reach-continues to deepen the integration of“Art + Technology + City,” expand Shanghai's international connections, and highlight the vitality of both global and local creative teams.
At the same time, Tang Hao, CEO of SMG Motion Magic and founder of the Open Call, emphasized that Shining Shanghai has grown from small beginnings into a globally recognized event. Guided by the principle of“technology-led, dual-engine driven,” the Open Call leverages advanced tools like Ultra HD, VR, and AR to expand artistic possibilities and immersion. At the same time, it integrates art with commerce and tourism through a“culture-commerce-tourism-exhibition” model, creating platforms for artists, revitalizing urban spaces, and bringing new vitality to city life.
Gill Minervini, former Festival Director of Vivid Sydney, shared her excitement and best wishes:“This year's theme, Luminescent Roots: Stories of Home, is something we can all relate to and I am excited to see the various interpretations and dimensions that this year's artists bring to this universal narrative. My best wishes and congratulations to all of the artists involved and to the organisers of this internationally important event. I can't wait to see Shanghai shine even brighter.”
Since its successful editions in 2023 and 2024, Shining Shanghai (Jing'an) International Light Art Open Call has established itself among the world's leading mapping competitions, alongside iMapp Romania and Tokyo's 1 Minute Projection Mapping. In 2025, as a highlight of Shining Shanghai Jing'an International Light Art Exhibition, the winning works will also feature in the Jing'an sub-venue of Shanghai International Light Festival, offering a premier global stage for artists and brands alike.
