Stampede Takes Lives at Rally Led by Actor Vijay
(MENAFN) A catastrophic stampede resulted in the deaths of at least 39 individuals and left over 50 others severely injured during a political gathering led by renowned actor Vijay in Tamil Nadu, India, on Saturday.
The tragic event took place in the Karur district amid a campaign for his newly-formed political faction, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, has initiated a judicial investigation into the fatal incident and has also declared financial relief for the families of the victims.
He informed the media, “So far, 39 people have died, including 13 men, 17 women, 4 boys, and 5 girls – while 51 people, including 26 men and 25 women, are receiving intensive treatment,” emphasizing the severity of the tragedy.
Footage circulating from the chaotic rally captures a sea of people surrounding a campaign truck, with Vijay atop the vehicle delivering his address.
In the videos, he is seen tossing water bottles to those who had fainted and urgently appealing for police intervention to manage the situation.
Officials stated that rescue personnel responded rapidly after the stampede began. Medical centers in the area are still caring for many of the wounded, with a significant number reported to be in critical condition.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the 51-year-old film star turned political leader conveyed his sorrow through a heartfelt post on social media.
“I am at a loss for words to express the pain my heart endures. My eyes and mind are clouded with sorrow. The faces of all of you whom I have met keep flashing through my mind,” he shared on X, reflecting the deep emotional impact of the event.
