Australia Commits to Steep Carbon Emissions Cut Target at UN Summit

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged a steep cut in carbon emissions, announcing that his government will aim to reduce greenhouse gases by as much as 70% by 2035. The commitment was made during his address at the United Nations Climate Summit in New York on Wednesday.

“We can protect our environment and build a stronger and fairer economy for the next generation,” Albanese declared, emphasizing Australia’s dual focus on climate responsibility and economic growth.

Unveiling the updated climate target, he added: “That is the optimism and determination that Australia brings to this task, and today, I present Australia's next nationally determined contribution. Australia's 2035 target is to reduce emissions by 62% to 70%.”

The prime minister underscored that the new target is not only aspirational but grounded in evidence. “This target is ambitious, but importantly, it is also achievable. It is backed by the independent scientific advice of our climate change authority,” he said.

Framing the goal as part of a broader global effort, Albanese stressed its alignment with international climate accords. “This target will ensure that Australia honors our commitment to the Paris Agreement and its goal of keeping global temperatures below dangerous levels.”

He also highlighted Australia's growing role as a clean energy powerhouse, saying that renewable resources would fuel regional economic growth. “What is most important is having the practical plan to reach our goal, and that is where Australian clean energy is key, just as our traditional resources have helped to power the extraordinary economic transformation of our region, our renewables can underpin new prosperity, the growing economies of the Indo-Pacific.”

The announcement positions Australia among a handful of major economies committing to accelerated decarbonization within the next decade, signaling a strategic shift toward renewable energy leadership in the Indo-Pacific.
