Denmark Suspends Flights at Aalborg After Drone Sightings

(MENAFN) Denmark temporarily halted air traffic at Aalborg Airport on Wednesday after unidentified “drones” were observed hovering near the runway, marking the latest episode in a series of unexplained sightings that also involved a facility housing the nation’s F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.

Northern Jutland police reported that “more than one drone” was spotted circling Aalborg with their lights activated around 9:44 pm local time on Wednesday.

Authorities later confirmed additional drone sightings near airports in Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Skrydstrup, which hosts Denmark’s fleet of F-16 and recently arrived F-35 aircraft.

Despite hours of surveillance and support from the Danish armed forces, the supposed unmanned aircraft remained unidentified.

Officials were unable to specify the type of drones, their operators, or the purpose behind their flights.

“It is too early to say what the goal of the drones is and who is the actor behind,” a police spokesperson told reporters, adding that efforts would be made to bring them down “if possible.” Ultimately, the drones disappeared without interception.

This event follows closely on the heels of a similar disruption at Copenhagen Airport, the busiest hub in the Nordic region, which had to suspend flights for four hours due to comparable drone activity.

Authorities described that episode as the most serious “attack” yet on Danish infrastructure, though investigators were also unable to identify or locate the responsible parties.
