(MENAFN) Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud underscored his nation’s readiness to act as a mediator in the ongoing discussions between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan concerning the regulation of Nile River resources.

In a conversation with a news agency on Tuesday, the head of state voiced firm backing for the recent launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, emphasizing that it “will have a great impact on the Ethiopian economy and the region as a whole.”

Mohamud also affirmed that Somalia is devoted to aiding all parties in achieving a calm and lasting solution. “During the opening ceremony, I confirmed that Somalia is ready to support both sides, Egypt and Ethiopia, as well as Sudan, to understand each other,” he declared.

He highlighted that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had shown his willingness to engage in dialogue with any groups that harbor concerns about the dam.

Although Egypt and Sudan have expressed strong resistance to the project, Mohamud emphasized that Somalia’s foreign policy remains impartial.

He further reassured that his country’s partnership with Ethiopia had never undermined its strategic connection with Cairo. “Somalis live in peace with themselves and with the whole world,” he concluded.
