Russia’s Duma Committee Approves Termination of Plutonium Disposal Deal

(MENAFN) Russia’s State Duma Committee on International Affairs has given its unanimous approval to terminate the Russian-American agreement on plutonium disposal, committee chairman Leonid Slutsky confirmed on Wednesday.

“The decision was made unanimously,” Slutsky, who also leads the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), told reporters, according to a Russian news agency. He further noted that the proposal will be presented for review during the parliament’s plenary session on October 8.

The 2000 agreement, originally signed between Moscow and Washington, was aimed at eliminating excess weapons-grade plutonium in an effort to reduce nuclear stockpiles and curb the risk of proliferation. However, Russia suspended its participation in 2016, citing what it termed "unfriendly" actions by the United States.
