Beijing Protests U.S. Over Rubio’s Criticism of South China Sea Reserve

(MENAFN) Beijing on Monday formally protested Washington following what it described as “wrongful” statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning China’s disputed South China Sea territory.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded sharply to Rubio’s criticism of China’s recent establishment of a national nature reserve at Scarborough Shoal. Rubio labeled the move a "destabilizing" effort aimed at reinforcing broad territorial and maritime claims in the contested region.

“It is China’s sovereign right to create a nature reserve on the island, which is legitimate and lawful and beyond reproach,” Lin insisted in defense of Beijing’s decision.

He further accused the United States of interference, stating, “The US is not a party to the South China Sea and has repeatedly made irresponsible remarks.”
