Ex-German Diplomat Cautions of Genocide Complicity

(MENAFN) A former German envoy to the United Nations has delivered a grave caution that Germany may be judged guilty of involvement in genocide because of its backing for Israel’s operations in Gaza.

Christoph Heusgen, who previously acted as a senior adviser to ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel, stated in a weekend interview that Germany’s provision of weapons to Israel could result in severe legal consequences.

"There is a real danger that if Germany supplies weapons to Israel that are used in Gaza, it will be convicted of aiding and abetting genocide. That would be a catastrophe," Heusgen warned.

He distinguished between arms supplied for Israel’s protection against threats from states such as Iran and those deployed in the ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip. The latter, he emphasized, must be halted without delay.

“The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has determined that there is a risk of genocide in Gaza. Israel has failed to implement the ICJ's requirements, such as effective measures for the delivery of humanitarian aid. On the contrary, people are starving,” Heusgen said.

He further highlighted that the toll of killed and injured Palestinian civilians is catastrophically high and cannot be excused.

Under growing domestic pressure, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coalition administration announced last month that Germany would stop authorizing future arms exports to Israel that could be employed in Gaza.

Nevertheless, the government left uncertain whether already-approved weapons shipments would still be carried out.
