Russia Expands Zapad-2025 Drills To Kaliningrad Region

Citing a statement from Russia's Ministry of Defense, the media outlet reported that Russian Baltic Fleet Marine Corps participated in the exercises.

According to the official statement, they were training to counter the landing of a“hypothetical enemy” on the coast in Kaliningrad region

In the second stage, the Marines engaged a simulated enemy landing force and conducted live fire exercises with small arms and BTR-82A armored personnel carriers. In the coastal defense simulation, they used the Berezhok combat missile-artillery system to destroy an enemy naval drone.

Throughout this phase of the exercises, Tu-22M3 supersonic bombers patrolled the neutral waters of the Barents Sea. They also performed“combat training missions” over the Barents Sea for four hours.

According to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense, on September 15 one of the stages of the Zapad-2025 will take place at the 227th combined military training ground in the Minsk region.

As reported by Ukrinform, joint strategic exercises of Belarusian and Russian armed forces Zapad-2025 began in Belarus on Friday, September 12. At the time, both countries stated that the drills would take place on Belarusian territory at training grounds in the interior or eastern regions and are officially described as defensive in nature.

Against this backdrop, and amid Russian drone attacks on Poland, the Republic of Poland announced on September 11 the deployment of approximately 40,000 troops along its borders with Belarus and Russia. Polish authorities noted that one of the goals of the Zapad-2025 is to practice a potential attack on the so-called Suwałki Corridor - a narrow strip of territory between Belarus and Kaliningrad that connects Poland and Lithuania.
