Rotten Returns: Kashmir's Fruit Tragedy On Wheels
For 18 days, trucks carrying fresh produce, from watermelons to seasonal fruits, sat stranded on NH-44, the lifeline connecting the valley to the mainland.
A landslide, triggered by rains, turned the highway into an impassable stretch of mud and rubble, halting movement and trapping both goods and drivers.
When the trucks finally rolled into the Srinagar fruit mandi on Monday, the relief was short-lived.
Much of the produce had spoiled, the journey having turned fresh fruit into waste.
Traders, who had invested heavily in the stock, were left staring at mountains of rotten goods, their losses tangible and morale shaken.
“This is heartbreaking,” said one trader, watching workers unload the damaged produce.“We rely on timely transport, but every monsoon brings the same uncertainty.”
