No Russian Troop Movements Near Border During Zapad-2025 Drills, SBGS Spox Reports
“As for our border directly, there has been no such activity, including any movements toward our border, even in its immediate vicinity - fortunately. But we continue to monitor everything happening on Belarusian territory, even though the drills are being held far from our border. Both the Defense Ministry's intelligence units and the Border Guard Service continue to keep watch. I can again note that as of now, during this active phase of the joint drills, which began on September 12 and are to conclude on September 16, Russia has not engaged a significant number of its forces and assets. The majority of those taking part on Belarusian territory are units of that country's army,” Demchenko said.
He added that no formation of troop groupings or redeployment toward Ukraine's border has been observed.
At the same time, the spokesperson stressed that this direction remains a threat, particularly in the context of joint exercises, and Ukraine's task is to strengthen its defense capabilities along the border with Belarus, which stretches more than 1,000 kilometers.
“We must have strong defensive positions from Volyn to Chernihiv region, fortifying both the border line itself and the border areas, so that every Ukrainian soldier stationed in this sector has every capability to counter any threat that could come from Belarusian territory,” Demchenko emphasized.

The Zapad-2025 drills in Belarus are being conducted either deep inside the country or in its eastern regions and are officially declared to be defensive in nature.
Demchenko assured on Friday that the number of Russian personnel involved in Zapad-2025 is smaller than in 2023, when Russia maintained about 10,000–12,000 troops in Belarus.
During the Zapad-2021 maneuvers, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
