Trump Signals Possibility of Action Against Venezuela
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has not dismissed the idea of targeting mainland Venezuela, accusing the nation of sending "gang members and drugs into America."
The remarks follow weeks of rising friction between the two countries. Washington has dispatched three warships and roughly 4,000 troops to the Southern Caribbean, asserting that the operation is aimed at dismantling drug cartels.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, however, maintains that his government has already neutralized trafficking networks within the country.
Addressing reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, on Sunday, Trump was questioned about the prospect of a strike on Venezuela and whether he was concerned about retaliation from Maduro.
”We’ll see what happens,” Trump stated. “Look, Venezuela is sending us their gang members, their drug dealers, and drugs. It’s not acceptable.”
Maduro contends that his administration has eradicated major trafficking operations and defeated significant gangs.
Speaking to a news agency on Thursday, the Venezuelan leader claimed that Washington is exploiting the fight against drug traffickers as a justification to access Venezuela’s abundant natural resources.
He added that these measures are part of a larger “war plan” intended to impose US dominance globally.
