Trump Urges Europe to Impose Stricter Sanctions on Russia
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he is prepared to enforce additional restrictions on Russia, but emphasized that Europe must respond in a manner equal to Washington’s actions.
"Europe is buying oil from Russia. I don't want them to buy oil, and the sanctions that they're putting on are not tough enough. I'm willing to do sanctions, but they're going to have to toughen up their sanctions commensurate with what I'm doing," he remarked to journalists while heading back to the White House from Morristown, New Jersey.
His remarks mirrored his stance from Saturday, when he posted a message on the US-based social media platform Truth Social, which he owns, noting in a letter to NATO states and the international community that he is “ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.”
Trump also underlined that NATO’s dedication to addressing Russia has been “far less than 100%” and characterized ongoing purchases of Russian crude by “some” as “shocking.”
Previously, Trump had threatened secondary sanctions on nations continuing to buy Russian oil if there was no headway in stopping the conflict in Ukraine.
He has already levied an extra 25% duty on Indian products, citing its ongoing imports of Russian crude.
Meanwhile, the G7 members together with the European Union enforced a ceiling on Russian oil prices. In retaliation, Russia boosted shipments of its crude to countries including China and India.
