Poland Says Russia’s Drone Incursion Aimed to Test NATO’s Readiness
(MENAFN) Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has stated that recent Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace were a calculated attempt to gauge NATO's reaction without triggering a full-scale conflict.
In an interview with media on Sunday, Sikorski described the drones as "duds," suggesting that Russia's objective was to provoke a response from Poland without escalating tensions into war.
“Interestingly, they were all duds, which suggests to me that Russia tried to test us without starting a war,” Sikorski remarked.
Responding to criticism that Poland’s defenses were caught off guard after only shooting down three or four of the approximately 19 drones, Sikorski dismissed these concerns. He emphasized that the drones caused minimal damage, and no one was injured.
“The drones didn’t reach their targets and there was minor damage to property, nobody was hurt. If it had happened in Ukraine, by Ukrainian definitions, that would be regarded as a 100% success,” Sikorski explained. He added that had there been casualties, the response from Warsaw would have been far more aggressive.
The Polish foreign minister also rejected US President Donald Trump's suggestion that the drone incident may have been a mistake. Sikorski pointed out the implausibility of 19 drones veering off course in a single night, saying, “You can believe that one or two veer off target, but 19 mistakes in one night, over seven hours, sorry, I don’t believe it.”
Russia has denied any intentional targeting of Poland, with contradictory statements emanating from Moscow. Sikorski took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the Russian government’s inconsistent narrative, questioning which version of events should be trusted.
“The Russian government suggests that Russian drones violated Polish airspace by mistake, while the Russian ambassador to the UN claims that Russian drones cannot physically reach Poland. Which Russian lie should we believe?” Sikorski wrote.
In response to the incident, NATO announced Friday that it would be deploying additional fighter jets to bolster defense along its eastern flank, aiming to better protect against potential future drone threats.
