Apple Delays iPhone Air Launch in China
(MENAFN) American technology behemoth Apple is expected to delay the distribution of its iPhone Air in China as it addresses compliance issues related to the embedded SIM (eSIM) technology in cooperation with Chinese regulators, a news outlet reported on Friday.
As of Friday morning, Apple revised the instructions for ordering the iPhone Air on the mainland, replacing the original release schedule with the statement: "release information to be updated later."
The company had earlier announced that shipments would begin on Sept. 19, with advance orders starting the same day.
Due to its ultra-slim design of just 5.6 millimeters — the thinnest iPhone ever — the iPhone Air requires the use of an eSIM.
As per the firm's official site, pre-orders for other newly introduced devices — the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Max, and the standard iPhone 17 — will commence Friday night and remain on track for the Sept. 19 rollout.
Company representatives told Chinese outlets that Apple is "working closely with regulatory authorities to bring it to China as soon as possible," the report stated.
State-run telecom operators China Unicom, China Mobile, and China Telecom will "provide eSIM support (with) specific timing subject to regulatory approval," according to Apple.
Until now, the company had exclusively partnered with China Unicom for this function.
The telecommunications companies mentioned via social platforms that they are awaiting authorization from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to proceed with eSIM implementation.
