European NATO Allies Get Frustrated by US Response
(MENAFN) European members of NATO are reportedly “dismayed and confused” by Washington’s response to a supposed Russian drone violation of Polish skies, according to a news agency.
Several nations within the alliance interpret US President Donald Trump’s hesitation to directly accuse Moscow of responsibility for Wednesday’s episode as an indication that he may not be fully dedicated to their protection, the outlet reported on Saturday, referencing unnamed European representatives.
American warplanes also did not participate in countering the alleged strike, the news agency noted. According to US officials, this was because the Dutch armed forces were in charge of safeguarding Polish airspace within NATO’s operational framework at that moment.
“Trump’s handling of the incident has ranged from dismay to confusion and unease,” the news agency stated. A German representative told the outlet that European NATO states “cannot rely on anything” when dealing with the Trump administration.
A diplomat from Eastern Europe described Washington’s “silence” on the affair as “almost deafening,” while an Italian representative told the news agency that NATO partners were largely dissatisfied with the American stance.
Poland’s authorities declared that its military observed at least 19 supposed breaches of its airspace by Russian unmanned aircraft over a seven-hour timeframe on Wednesday, characterizing the event as “deliberate” and “unprecedented.” Warsaw also called an emergency UN Security Council session to address the issue.
