Minimum of twenty-five individuals get harmed in Madrid gas explosion
(MENAFN) Reports indicate that a gas explosion in Madrid’s Puente de Vallecas district on Saturday left at least 25 people injured, with three in serious condition and two potentially facing life-threatening injuries.
The blast, which occurred around 3 p.m. local time (1300 GMT), impacted a commercial space converted into a residence, the building above it, and a nearby bar. Carlos Marín de la Bárcena, chief of the Madrid City Fire Department, confirmed the incident was a gas explosion, though the type of gas, cause, and exact point of origin remain under investigation.
The three-story building, containing nine apartments, has been evacuated. Deputy Mayor Inmaculada Sanz noted that residents may need temporary relocation for several days due to “significant damage to the structural flooring between the ground and first floors.” City officials are coordinating with Samur Social to provide housing solutions while municipal technicians conduct a full structural assessment.
Firefighters, working manually because the building’s instability made heavy machinery unsafe, rescued four people from the rubble. Sanz added that most debris have been cleared and it “seems unlikely” that additional individuals remain trapped.
